Last night, I dreamed that while waiting to meet a friend to go running this evening (which is actually happening), I stopped in a book store and found four books I desperately wanted to read. Because they were store models, they were deeply discounted down to between .36 cents and .80 cents. I gleefully trotted around the store holding my four books and ran into a host of people I knew, from my kickball team to my running partner, and as I rounded back to where I had originally found the books, they were suddenly gone from my hands.

Panicked, I began digging through the area where I’d found them, but only imitation books with similar covers were there— and being sold for $7.99 to $13.99. My cheap book dream crumbled and I had to let go. Before leaving, I did one last scan and saw that Gore Vidal was selling his branded Gore Vidal Comfort Blanket, which was actually a nicely striped fabric, which people were meant to wear around their necks to relieve the stress caused by the economy.

The only thing I can glean from this is that I have now embraced living cheaply in dream life as well as real life… and also that the recesses of my mind come up with some very strange things. The Gore Vidal Comfort Blanket?

Charlottesville, Virginia

I journeyed to C-Ville for the first wedding of a close friend my age, which was eerie in and of itself as I still consider myself far too young for most things, let alone sealing my life to another person’s in holy matrimony. However, she and her now-husband had a gorgeous wedding and reception in Charlottesville and surrounding wine country, which brought me and the bride full circle.

We met, aged 15-16, at writer’s camp at UVa many summers ago. Since our angsty days in that hot summer sun, UVa had (rightfully) torn down our dilapidated dorm and replaced it with a brand new lab of some kind, but other than that had not changed much. The Lawn, where seniors (I hate when they say “fourth years”) get to live if they survive the limited lottery, is verdant and lush as always, and the architecture beautifully simple and functional.

The drive was killer, about 7 to 8 hours each way dependent on traffic, but was picturesque nonetheless once you got off the NJ Turnpike. I got to see my junior year roommate, newly transplanted there, and several friends from college. It was strange to see us all behaving well, dressed up like real adults and watching our friends get married. Of course we all have responsibilities and are each mature in our own right, but seeing a wedding of a friend your age certainly makes reflection of the weekend fairly more serious than just a good time with friends. Several people’s lives just changed in a huge way, and we witnessed it. And all in the utterly breathtaking view of the Virginia country and sunset, which just makes me feel comfortable and satisfied by its beauty.

This Almost Ruined My Year

This Almost Ruined My Year:
…until I read that they are only recommending deletion of the illustrious, useful, and FANTASTIC Oxford comma for internal Oxford University publications and releases. They still recommend it for public use. First of all, huge sigh of relief that I don’t have to start amending my sentences and word order to be more confusing. Second of all, Oxford University’s loss. Third of all, I have no idea why this issue of whether or not to use the Oxford, or serial, comma, is such a hot-button topic with me. I get irrationally upset that it might get snatched from my claws (obviously my hands turn into claws when I am angered by the grammar aristocracy). For now, it’s still mine! Muahaha.
